Can You Have Medicare and Medicaid?

DUAL ELIGIBILITY

Some individuals qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, often called “dual eligible.”

  • Medicare pays first; Medicaid may cover premiums, copays, and additional services that Medicare doesn’t.

  • This is especially important for seniors in assisted living or with chronic conditions.

Eligibility rules and covered benefits vary by state. Applying is the best way to find out whether you qualify for dual eligibility or a Medicare Savings Program.

Click link below to visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare-Medicaid Coordination Office for trusted information about dual eligibility, coordinated benefits, and available resources.

How do I qualify for dual eligibility?

To qualify for dual eligibility, you must meet the eligibility requirements for both Medicare and Medicaid and enroll in both programs. Apply for Medicare through the Social Security Administration and for Medicaid through your state's Medicaid agency. Eligibility requirements vary by state.
